Dojo Discernments
Hi all, welcome to these week's iteration of Dojo Discernments where I share nuggets of thought gleaned on the mats!
What I'm Watching
A quick Kobe throwback to 2000 reminding us that in times of high stress, when cortisol wants to seep its way in and take over our nervous systems, to override that and chill. I taught my kids' program this face and posture to overcome the anxiety and energy of their first major tournament, if it helped my students settle into their moment, maybe it’ll do the same for you.
What I'm Seeing
To throw big in grappling, you have to be willing to get thrown. Whether it’s Judo or Wrestling, hitting big throws means accepting the risk of taking some too. Commitment, follow-through, give and take, trust.
Hesitation and doubt causes failure and injury. When it's time, regardless of being offensive or defense, lean into the trust.
What I'm Focusing on: Iterations
Iterations of practice are essential. When you recognize each moment as a chance to refine a pattern, not just repeat it, you naturally slow down and become more intentional.
This is not just a repetition, but an iteration of a process that will continuously happen. This paradigm shift from repetition to iteration allows you to make progress at a compounding daily rate.
Quote I'm Pondering
"How much are you trying to learn today?"
Sometimes learning more can be to our detriment. Maybe we aren't ready for that next piece yet. If you get today right, tomorrow will fall right into place.
What Are You Passing Down
What anxieties, worries, or faults are you passing down to those who look up to you? Whether students or children. I see a lot of kids taking on the burdens their parents were unable to rid themselves of. Leaves me to question myself, what are you passing down?
