Dojo Discernments
Hi all, welcome to this weeks iteration of Dojo Discernments where I share nuggets of wisdom earned on the mats this week. From students drafted into pro leagues, to the UFC fully backing grappling.
What I'm Sipping On
Ultima Replenisher PASSIONFRUIT Boad Spectrum Electrolyte Mix Powder
These electrolytes are my second most important supplement that I take! Now, I've written about Ultima before in the newsletters, but I stumbled on the passionfruit flavor this week and man is it a gamechanger.
I personally fell in love with passionfruit water down in Tulum, Mexico after a Combat Jiu-Jitsu event a few years back and now it is my favorite fruit drink there is.
This week, with the passionfruit Ultima mix in my bottle, I’ve been crushing my daily gallon of water by early afternoon, not because I’m forcing it, but because it’s genuinely enjoyable to sip all day.
So give it a shot, whether you're a fan of passionfruit, ultima, or want to start supplementing with electrolytes.
What We Saw
The UFC, the reason many of us started training in the first place, has now stepped fully into the sport of jiu-jitsu, committing millions of dollars over the next few years to its growth.
They’re launching their efforts with Road to the Title, a show styled after The Ultimate Fighter, leading up to a dedicated event: UFC BJJ.
It’s not just the UFC, organizations across the board are pouring money into grappling. Jiu-jitsu is entering a new era of visibility and investment.
This shift hit home for me when my dad called this week. He said
I’m at lunch and they’ve got the UFC on, but it’s just jiu-jitsu. No strikes.”
He was astonished. The sport I’ve dedicated my life to, something he’s watched me do for years was now on TV at his lunchtime hangout.
We’re in a moment. And it’s only just beginning.
There was a time when grappling was a side note. Now it’s center stage. If that doesn’t motivate you to sharpen your game, I don’t know what will.
What I See
Andrew Tacket this weekend scored a snuggle bug variation!
With the help of a subcriber of The Dojo we identified that it varied from the snugglebug, in that the secondary arm became the primary arm; much like the difference between an Andaconda and a D'arce.
We named this move the Cuddlebug. Stand by for a break down.
PGF
The Professional Grappling League is coming up onto it's 8th iteration and we just had Mike John and Dominic Lobo drafted onto their respective teams. The PGF is another organization who is throwing money into the sport. With a 100k team prize and 20k individual prize for winning the event.
PGF is unique in that it will be ran over the course of 6 weeks, meant to replicate a sports league "regular season". So if you see either of these guys around, give them support they need to gear up for an event like this and tune in!
What I'm Teaching
Jiu-Jitsu is not our identity, excellence is
Especially for those in their formative years — and even for those of us fully committed to the path, it’s important to remember: we are not our skills, wins, or performances.
Let excellence be your standard, not just in technique, but in how you carry yourself.
See you on the mats, God Bless
Isaac
