Dojo Discernments
Hi all, here is your weekly dose of Dojo Discernments where I share nuggets of thought gleaned on the mats this week!
Handfighting
Somethings in life are a daily neccesity. Washing your hands, commuting to works, daily tasks in general. As a grappler one of those daily tasks is handfighting. You cannot wait or be behind in the handfight, it demands attention, presence, and interest. The handfight teaches us a lot, to not fall behind on our duties but to get to it.
What I'm Watching
BJJ Stars 15 There were many a great matches on this card, but here's Roberto Jiminez vs Izaak Michell that won Fight of the Night.
What I'm Studying: Uchi Komi
In Judo Uchi Komi is a drill where the thrower repeatedly practices the initial steps and entry of a throw without completing it: Your setup and entry. This style of training is very effective and can be applied to our sweeps an submissions too, putting an emphasis where it needs to be in the initial stages of an attack.
Quote I'm Pondering
"I'd rather a half drawn Mona Lisa than a piece of crap work of art."- anonymous
A brash reminder to take things slow, get them right, and when the end result comes you will be thankful.
Know the Model
It may take a while, but if you are at blue belt or beyond you should have seen the whole game by now. Work to model what you know out. The more you do, the faster you'll grow.
If there was a specific point that resonated with you reach out and let us know.
